Program Infomation
The current joint program in the college is the Sino-American Nursing Program, in partnership with Bob Jones University,USA. BJU is a private liberal arts college in the southeastern USA that has been in operation for nearly a century. In 1997, BJU and SUMHS (at that time, operating as the Shanghai Second Medical University) began an educational partnership with the help of faculty from the USA. In 2000, this became a permanent partnership with the signing of an agreement between the universities and the provision of American instructors to teach full-time in Shanghai. Since then, more than thirty qualified American faculty members have joined the university’s international educational mission.
Teachers focus on developing students international-standard healthcare techniques, knowledge of current practice in the USA, English-language skills, and patient communication and critical thinking abilities, producing graduates who are confident and competent not only in Chinese healthcare environments but also in international hospitals.
The program currently has a permanent foreign faculty team with 15 overseas teachers, 8 classes, more than 310 registered students, and 5 tertiary A hospitals as its clinical practice base. The foreign teachers all possess professional certification from the USA, and more than half of them possess either master’s or doctoral degrees. In addition, the majority of foreign instructors have been with SUMHS for five or more years, giving them a strong perspective on the needs of Chinese students.
The employment rate of the graduates in the last three years is higher than 98%, and 99% of graduates acquire “double certificates”; that is, certification by the foreign faculty as well as the Nurse Qualification Certificate issued by the Ministry of Health. Many go on to employment with international English-language healthcare providers in Shanghai, or to further study abroad.
